Being the oldest National Park in 1957, Bako National Park offers the perfect introduction for visitors to witness the Borneo Wildlife and Borneo Rainforest. Despite the park seemingly small size, it contains a wide range of vegetation, from swamp forest, grasslands, mixed dipterocarp forest, mangrove forest, heath forest, cliff vegetation and beach vegetation. The main highlights of Bako National Park are the Proboscis Monkeys which can be found wandering around in the park. Visitors might even spot Saltwater Crocodiles, bearded pigs, monitor lizards, long-tailed macaques, etc


Bako National Park is the oldest and one of the smallest national parks in Sarawak Borneo. It is located about 37 km from Kuching city, which there are two stages of journey in order to reach Bako National Park. Visitors will need to go for 45-60 minutes overland transfer from Kuching city to Bako Market, then from Bako Market, visitors will need to ride on a small motor boat for another 20-minutes to reach Bako National Park. Visitors will get the chance to experience the stunning scenery along the way.

Bako National Park offers a wide range of Borneo Wildlife, birds and various species of flora. Home for the rare Proboscis Monkeys, which are endemic only in Borneo Island. The Proboscis Monkeys are in reddish-brown fur with grey limbs and a whitetail To distinguish a male and female Proboscis Monkeys would be its nose and belly. The male Proboscis Monkey usually will have a huge pendulous nose and large pot-belly. Moreover, there are also other Borneo Wildlife that visitors can see there, but the main highlight in Bako National Park would be the Proboscis Monkeys.

There are few activities visitors can do in Bako National Park, such as witness the interesting sea stacks, relaxing by the beach, and various trails to go for jungle trekking. Pickup from hotel and drive about 35 minutes to Bako Village. From the village, take about a 25-minute boat ride (depending on the tide) to the park situated on a peninsula. Bako is one of the best places in Sarawak to see wildlife in a natural setting. The various types of animals that are commonly spotted at Bako include the proboscis monkeys, silver leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, wild boars, monitor lizards and numerous species of birds. Forest types range from mangrove to kerangas (heath forest), tropical swamp vegetation, cliff vegetation and beach vegetation. There are several trails to follow inside the park depending on level of fitness and interest. The park’s coastline is dotted with small bays, coves and beaches. Return to Kuching mid-afternoon.
