4D3N Maliau Basin Adventure
Maliau Basin is known as Sabah Borneo’s “Lost World” as this area is surrounded by pristine primary Borneo Rainforest, which has become one of the best sites for jungle trekking and bird watching activities. With a distinct and diverse flora of about 1800 species have been discovered around the Maliau Basin area, which given many reasons for researchers and naturalist to visit Maliau Basin. One of the highlights of Maliau Basin is trekking to reach the magnificent seven-tier Maliau Falls, as well as spotting Borneo Wildlife such as Orangutan, Borneo Pygmy Elephant, Proboscis Monkey and more mammal species.
Maliau Basin is known as Sabah Borneo’s “Lost World”. Gazetted as Protection Forest Reserve (Class 1) in 1997. It can be only accessed via 4WD vehicles from the towns of Tawau or Keningau, both take about 4-5 hours drive away. Maliau Basin is home to diverse species of flora. It recorded about 1800 species, includes 6 types of pitcher plant and more 80 species of orchids – some are still new records in Sabah Borneo.
Apart from that, many rare and endangered Borneo Wildlife species can be found there, such as Borneo Pygmy Elephants, Clouded Leopard, Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey and Malayan Sun Bear. Moreover, various species of Borneo Birds have been recorded to date, which about 300 species that include Bornean Bristlehead and Blue-headed Pitta.
This tour offers any visitors a chance to get close to the nature by going for jungle trekking activities, witness the magnificent seven-tier Maliau Falls, bird watching, Borneo Wildlife spotting through a night safari drive, check out the diverse species of flora while trekking, and simply experience the thrill into the unspoilt wilderness of Maliau Basin area.
Accommodation in Maliau Basin is only a basic hostel type and camping, which is at the Maliau Basin Studies Centre and Agathis Camp. Both offer a well-equipped and comfortable accommodation, with electricity, toilets, and showers provided.

Day 1 MALIAU BASIN STUDIES CENTRE (MSBC)
Upon arrival at the MBSC, check-in and enjoy your lunch. After that, embark on your journey for an introductory walk around the
Day 2 MALIAU BASIN STUDIES CENTRE – AGATHIS CAMP – GINSENG CAMP
Wake up early morning for breakfast. Bring your packed lunch and depart about an hour drive to reach Agathis Camp via 4WD vehicle. Upon arrival, start your 9 km jungle trekking activity to reach Ginseng Camp (Trekking time: 5-6 hours duration). Have your packed lunch en-route. Once arriving at the Ginseng Camp, settle in and proceed to Ginseng Falls, about 15 minutes walk from the camp. Relax and enjoy a cooling dip in the water of Ginseng Falls.
Return to camp for your dinner. Overnight at Ginseng Camp.
Day 3 GINSENG CAMP – MALIAU FALLS – GINSENG CAMP
Wake up early and have your breakfast. Bring your packed lunch and proceed for your 4.8 km jungle trekking adventure to reach Maliau Falls, estimate trekking time about 2-3 hours. Once arriving at the Maliau Falls, have your lunch there and spend the entire afternoon with activities such as visit the famous 7-tier Maliau Basin Waterfalls, swimming, nature photography, as well as witness the unique species of insects and plants in Borneo Jungle.
After that, return back to Ginseng Camp for dinner.
Day 4 GINSENG CAMP – AGATHIS CAMP – MALIAU BASIN STUDIES CENTRE (MBSC)
Wake up early morning and have your breakfast. Proceed your trekking activity to return back to Agathis Camp. Have your lunch en-route. Upon arrival at Agathis Camp by noon, transfer back to the MBSC via 4WD vehicle for about an hour. Our driver will be waiting for you there to proceed for your next journey.
End of tour.
