Pulau Tiga – The Survivor Island!
With a little bit of Kuala Penyu…
Pulau Tiga Island or Survivor Island is one of the beautiful islands that are nearby to Kota Kinabalu City. It is one of the best places to chill out and just relax if you are planning to have a relaxing Island escape away from the busy bustling city life.120km away from Kota Kinabalu City, only about 2 hours drive to reach to Kuala Penyu town which is the starting point to Pulau Tiga Island. Kuala Penyu is a very small and quiet town that is not crowded and the best part is, you will never have to face and get stuck in a traffic jam in Kuala Penyu.
A wide selection of fresh fishes, squids, shrimps, crabs and many more at the Kuala Penyu Fish Market.
Waiting at Kuala Penyu Jetty before boat transfer to the island.
Kuala Penyu is also the best place to get fresh seafood. Hit the local fish market to see a large variety of all kinds of weird, unique, and interesting looking fish, squids, and shells, that is being sold in the fish market. When it comes to the prices, they are super cheap compared to the ones you find in the Kota Kinabalu City Fish Markets.
Clear blue sky, crystal clear blue water, and white sandy beaches, you can’t expect anything less. This surely is the perfect island to be in away from all the concrete jungles and the crazy traffic jams of the city area. Go for a swim, snorkel around the coral reefs, or go for a fun kayaking session around the island. When you talk about the wildlife, don’t worry you will see loads of them on the island. Monitor Lizards, Macaque Monkeys, Snakes, Birds and many more. The common one is the monitor lizards as they are always hanging around the resort area waiting for any leftovers from the visitors.
A common sight in the island. The Monitor Lizards in the island likes to hang around the beach area.
One of the unique species that you can see in Pulau Tiga is the Bornean Mud Man! You will be seeing them a lot running out from the jungle and straight to the sea.
A group of men in mud.
You can always see them near the beaches, Watch out for the Bornean Mud Man! Haha! Just joking, these are the visitors from the Volcano Mud Pool.

So, What is the Volcano Mud Pool?…
There are three Mud Volcano Pool in Pulau Tiga Island but the other two is dried and the one that is active can be easily be reached from the beach area. The active and largest pool is just located in the centre of the island. Just take a short 2km trek through the jungle and you will reach there in no time. A visit to Pulau Tiga is not complete without getting yourself covered in mud and some say that the mud contains medicinal and therapeutic properties that is good for the skin but most of the people only jump in to have fun. You’ll be amazed how you can easily float in the mud you won’t sink in the mud so don’t worry on that.

The jetty area is also a good place to chill and relax at night. Enjoy the cool ocean breeze and the sound of the crashing waves. You can see a variety of different species of fish that is around the jetty area
There’s one more thing not most people know why Pulau Tiga is also called the Survivor Island. Back in year 2000 there’s a British Reality Game Show called Survivor and that was held in Pulau Tiga with 16 American Competitors and that is where Pulau Tiga got it’s name the Survivor Island.
Snorkel around the reefs of Pulau Tiga and you’ll be amazed to see the amazing display of beautiful coral reefs and also the wide variety of colourful fishes around the coral areas. There is so much to see that you wish you have more time in the water. Look at that clear blue water, doesn’t it make you wanna jump? I wouldn’t think twice to jump in it.

One of the places you can visit when you are in Pulau Tiga is another island that is nearby to Pulau Tiga Island and getting there will only take about 20 minutes boat ride. It’s a small island with beautiful corals surrounding it. Believe it or not, the name of the island is Pulau Ular or Snake Island.
The Island itself doesn’t look that scary like the name. The water are super crystal clear and when you’re on the island watch out for your steps and always be cautious.
The poisonous sea snakes is pretty but deadly. Not to worry as they tend to hide under the rocks and avoid human contact. They’re quite shy around people but when you see one please do not go too near to them if you want to avoid a trip to stay at the luxurious hospital bed
A long stretch of white sandy beach and the clear blue ocean water. Simply relaxing! You’ll have nothing but a peace of mind away from all the chaotic city life
Another not to be missed thing to do is to take pictures with the Survivor Island Signboard! Your visit to the island will not be complete without a picture of it. Overall our stay here in Pulau Tiga is totally worth it and i’d say that the experience here is really different with any other island in Sabah. We got to experience of jumping into a Volcano Mud Pool, the relaxing surroundings of the island and many more. So next time if you are planning to have a weekend island escape, put Pulau Tiga in your list. It’ll be super worth it!
