Long Pasia Jungle Trekking and Village Homestay

Take a trekking expedition back in time and get a real life glimpse of Borneo’s rural village lifestyle in this remote and beautiful location in southwest Sabah. Boasting rivers, caves, rice paddy, and one of the largest waterfalls in Sabah. Long Pasia is an off the beaten path gem for travelers looking for an authentic experience when traveling Borneo.

Visiting Long Pasia provides travelers with adventure and a unique glimpse into rural Borneo. The journey is long but holds great rewards for intrepid travelers keen for an off the beaten track experience. You will meet Mr Dawa, nicknamed “King of the Jungle,” and have a chance to stay in his home where he will teach you about his passion, the jungles of Borneo. From edible plants to village remedies Mr Dawa has a wealth of knowledge about the jungle. When you’re not staying at his home he will be taking you on epic treks to discover some of the rare beauties in the area such as Maga waterfall, ancient chinese burial sites, 600 year old rock carvings, monolithic rock formations and more in the heart of Borneo.

Day 1: Kota Kinabalu to Long Pasia

  • Approx 7:30 am Depart from Kota Kinabalu and transfer to a 4×4 in the village of Sipitang (about 3 hours to sipitang and then 3 to 6 hours in the 4×4 depending on the road).  Before transferring vehicles, you will stop along the way for any last minute supplies and lunch.
  • Upon arrival at Long Pasia, you will meet the local host family and get settled in for the evening.  The host family will treat you to a delicious home cooked dinner and tell you what you can expect for the rest of your stay.

Day 2: Long Pasia Village Tour and Trekking

  • Following breakfast, you will head out for a day of trekking.  The first stop is the various highlights of the village such as the mud house, rice paddy, and the river flowing next to the town
  • You will continue your trek up into the hills outside of the area where Mr Dawa will teach you about local medicinal and edible plants while taking you to scenic vistas overlooking the village.
  • In late afternoon, you will return to the village and have time to relax or explore the village and mingle with the locals.
  • In the evening, you will be served a home cooked meal by your hosts and have the opportunity to hear some of the folklore shared by Mr. Dawa.

Day 3: Jungle Trekking

  • After breakfast, Mr Dawa will take you to across the river and into the jungle to search for wildlife, learn about medicinal plants, and forage for edible plants for the night’s dinner.
  • Along the way, Mr. Dawa will impart his knowledge of jungle survival skills and how almost everything around you in the jungle has some sort of use.
  • In the evening, you will be served a home cooked meal by your hosts and have the opportunity to hear some of the folklore shared by Mr. Dawa.

Day 4: Return to Kota Kinabalu

  • Early wake-up for breakfast and say goodbyes before hitting the road for the journey back to Kota Kinabalu.
  • Estimated arrival in Kota Kinabalu is 4:00-5:00PM

  • Following breakfast, you will pack your bag with only the essentials and head out for the trek into the jungle (the trek is 5-6 hours with lunch along the way.)
  • Along the way you will see the local rice paddy, beautiful rivers, primary jungle, and much more. Mr Dawa will impart his wealth of knowledge about the jungle, medicinal plants, survival skills, and native folklore.
  • Upon arrival at Maga Campsite, you will get camp set up and then visit the Maga Waterfall, one of the largest waterfalls in Sabah.
  • In the evening, you will enjoy dinner and relax around the campfire or embark on a night walk to discover interesting nocturnal animals and insects.

Day 3: Maga Waterfall, Caves, Monoliths

  • After breakfast, Mr Dawa will take you to to spend the day seeing sights in and around Maga Waterfall, including massive caves, 600 year old carved monoliths, and a rock overhang that is a place important to local folklore.

Day 4: Maga Campsite – Long Pasia

  • After breakfast, begin the hike back to Long Pasia
  • Upon arrival at Long Pasia, you can relax or explore the village and mingle with the locals.

Day 5: Return to Kota Kinabalu

  • Early wake-up for breakfast and say goodbyes before hitting the road for the journey back to Kota Kinabalu.

Day 3: Trek to the Border Area of Sabah, Sarawak, and Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo)

  • After breakfast, Mr Dawa will lead you on a trek deep into the heart of Borneo.  In this trek, depending on your fitness, you may very well spend the night in Indonesia or the Sarawak.
  • Along the way, you may encounter gibbons, red leaf monkeys, bearded pigs, and hornbills, among others.
  • Once Mr Dawa finds a suitable spot, you will set up camp and relax around the campfire.

Day 4: Continue Jungle Trek

  • After breakfast, you will break down camp and continue on a trek through virgin rainforest stopping along the way to search for animals, admire the clear rivers, and learn about the uses of the plants in the jungle.
  • Once Mr Dawa finds a suitable spot, you will set up camp and relax around the campfire.

Day 5: Return to Long Pasia

  • After breakfast, begin the hike back to Long Pasia
  • Upon arrival at Long Pasia, you can relax or explore the village and mingle with the locals.

Day 6: Return to Kota Kinabalu

  • Early wake-up for breakfast and say goodbyes before hitting the road for the journey back to Kota Kinabalu.
  • Estimated arrival in Kota Kinabalu is 4:00-5:00PM
