About Mulu National Park:

Mulu National Park is located in the interior of Sarawak, near the border with Brunei. The park is isolated from the outside world and can only be reached by a flight, or a long boat journey and hike. Daily flights from Kuching, Miri, and Kota Kinabalu connect locals and travellers to Mulu and its wonders.

Mulu is the largest national park in Sarawak. It was gazetted in 1974. The park is considered to be the most studied tropical limestone karst location in the world. One of the most notable research expeditions was performed by the Royal Geographic Society in 1978. During this expedition, more than one hundred scientists stayed in the field for over a year.

In 2000, the park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Every year, cave explorers discover new passageways in the intricate and extensive cave system.  Scientists continue to make new discoveries here, in one of the most bio-diverse places in the world.

The village of Mulu, located next to the national park and is home to the Orang Ulu, Kenyah, Kayan and Berawan people. The village has an airport, a school, a clinic and numerous homestays and guesthouses to cater for visitors.

About Mulu National Park’s Flora and Fauna:

Mulu National Park is one of the most bio-diverse places in the world. It is home to some of the richest sites worldwide in regards to palm species. The large Deer cave is home to one of the largest colonies of bats in the world and it has the largest colony of cave swiftlets on the planet.

Throughout the National Park, there are over 1700 mosses, 2500 species of plants and a whopping 4000 types of fungi. The park is home to 81 species of mammals, more than 270 species of birds and at least 20,000 species of invertebrates! Eight species of hornbills have been spotted in Mulu, including the majestic Rhinoceros Hornbill and the critically endangered Helmeted Hornbill.

About Mulu National Park’s Geology:

The landscape of Mulu is dominated by limestone. It is the soft limestone that has allowed massive caves to form in the park by process of erosion, primarily by water.

The national park is dotted with extensive cave systems. In total, there are more than 295 km of recorded cave passages with more being discovered all the time.

Deer Cave claims the title as the second largest cave passage in the world, big enough to fly jumbo jets through (although we wouldn’t recommend it.)
