Malaysia Self Drive Tour
11 DAYS / 10 NIGHTS
You will start off in Kuala Lumpur followed by a drive up to Fraser’s Hill for bird watching and some light trekking. If you are lucky enough, you will be able to spot some rare birds.
Next you will head to the virgin rainforests of Taman Negara where you will experience stunning nature and unique wildlife.
Following Taman Negara, you will drive up into the Cameron Highlands for a few days and then back down to the coast to the historic island of Penang. Penang is Malaysia’s food capital, offering a wide range of malaysian, chinese, indian, and fusion foods.
At Penang, you will hand over the reigns of your rental car, but the tour doesn’t end there. You will hop on a ferry to Langkawi and spend the last few days of your trip relaxing on this duty free island.
Day 1: Arrival Kuala Lumpur
Upon your arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, meet your driver who will take you to your hotel. Spend the afternoon by the swimming pool or start exploring the city at your own pace. Visit the Petronas Twin Towers, china town, one of the many shopping malls, or visit Little India.
Day 2: Kuala Lumpur – Fraser’s Hill
Today you will wake up early in the morning and go to Fraser’s Hill, for some bird watching, views, and light hiking. Enjoy a local lunch at one of the nearby restaurants before heading back to Kuala Lumpur.
Following the tour, the rest of the day is yours.
Day 3: Kuala Lumpur – Taman Negara
In the morning, you will meet the rental car representative and collect your car for the coming days. Start your drive towards Kuala Tahan, and stop along the way to visit a village, try some local coffee or take some photos of the scenery. Arrive at Kuala Tahan before nightfall, and park the rental car. Cross the river in a river taxi and check into your accommodation in Taman Negara National park. After dinner, you will meet up with your nature guide and who will take you into the jungle where you will look for wildlife and take in this ancient rainforest. The guide will lead you to an observation deck which will give you a higher point of view to better spot the nocturnal animals that are roaming about.
Day 4: Taman Negara
In the morning, you will meet your guide in the morning and trek (about 30 minutes) to the base of Teresek Hill, where the canopy walkway is situated. Here you will enjoy a bird’s eye view of the surrounding virgin rainforest. In the afternoon, continue your trek to Lubok Simpon for a refreshing dip.
Day 5: Taman Negara – Cameron Highlands
After breakfast, say goodbye to Taman Negara and cross the river once again. Collect your rental car and make your way to the Cameron Highlands. It is interesting to watch the landscape change from jungle to cloud forest as you climb up into the highlands.
The Cameron Highlands is an extensive hill station with an altitude of 1300 to 1800 meters. The cool air has offered a welcome respite from the tropical heat since the colonial days. While enjoying the fresh temperature and the beauty of the green hills you will be free to visit the tea plantations, butterfly farms, and other local agriculture, or head out for some hiking through the cloud forest.
Day 6: Cameron Highlands
In the morning, you’ll leave the car behind and hop into our Land Rover. Today you will visit Gunung Brinchang (Brinchang Mountain) and stop at the Boh tea plantation.
At the top of Gunung Brinchang, take an interpretive walk with our nature guides into the Mossy forest to hopefully spot unique plants like pitcher plant and orchids. A short drive down from the mountain will bring you to the Sungai Palas ‘BOH’ Tea Factory to see the tea fields and take a tour of the factory. Return to your accommodation in the late morning and spend the rest of the day exploring more of Cameron Highlands.
Day 7: Cameron Highlands – Penang
After breakfast, you’ll drive down the mountain and north to the island of Penang. There are many interesting places to visit along the way. We suggest stopping at Bukit Merah Orangutan Island, where orangutans are being rehabilitated. Cross the 13.5km long Penang Bridge and drive through the island to Georgetown. Arrive at your accommodation and check in. Today, you will also meet the rental car representative to hand over the rental car.
Day 8: Penang
Today you will take a scenic cycling tour through the streets of historic Georgetown. Explore the hidden gems of the city, visit the Clan Jetty and various temples. Stop by the Malay Mosque of Lebuh Acheh and learn about the traditional method of making the joss sticks (incense) that are used in the temples. You have not experienced Penang until you have tried the local food! Taste some of Penang’s Traditional Indian-Muslim Hawker food as a snack along the way. For an early lunch, stop by another hawker stall and try some Chinese fried noodles (Char Koay Teow) or fresh Chicken Rice.
Day 9: Penang – Langkawi Island
Hop aboard the ferry and depart on the three hour trip to langkawi. Once there, we’ll take you to your beach resort to enjoy Langkawi’s white sand beaches. Go for a swim in the sea or pool, stroll along the beach, and have some tax-free beers!
Day 10: Langkawi Island
Today you will spend a peaceful day kayaking in the Langkawi Geopark. Glide through Langkawi’s mangrove forests under the shadow of limestone cliffs, while enjoying a real up‐close and personal experience with the nature and ecology of the river. Explore small river channels where other ‘mass tourist boats’ can’t go and, if lucky, you may also spot a variety of Langkawi’s wildlife, including monkeys, snakes, eagles, kits, kingfishers, otters, and monitor lizards. Along the way, stop by the bat cave as well as an eagle area Visit a fish farm and floating restaurant for delicious local lunch with fruits and soft drinks or mineral water before heading back.
Day 11: Langkawi Departure
After breakfast, soak up the last rays of sun and enjoy the beach before our driver picks you up and takes you to the airport (pick-up time is dependent on your flight time, to make it easy for you.)
