Day 1: Arrive in Kuching, Sarawak
Today you will arrive at the capital of the state of Sarawak known as Kuching or the “Cat City”. Check into your accommodation and spend the rest of the day free at leisure. Kuching is a great and comfortable city to get around in. You can walk along the waterfront and visit various museums, all within close proximity. Kuching is famous for its delicious foods, including the Sarawak Laksa and the Kolo Mee dishes!
Day 2: Visit to Semenggoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Center
The itinerary is a short one today as you visit the Semenggoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. The centre is a temporary home to rehabilitate rescued orangutans. You can observe these unique creatures up close during the morning feeding. Make sure to take some photos to show your loved ones back home! Return to your accommodation in the late morning. The rest of the day is yours.
Day 3: Trekking and Wildlife Spotting at Bako National Park
After breakfast, meet your driver at the hotel lobby for a transfer to the Bako Village Jetty. Hop aboard the motorized boat, cruise down the river towards the sea and make your way to Bako National Park.
You will meet your guide and oexplore the boardwalks and mangrove trails that the national park has to offer. Keep an eye out for unique wildlife, including proboscis monkeys, silverleaf monkeys, macaques, mudskippers, and blue fiddler crabs. As you walk through the jungle, you will be able to spot a wide variety of birds and insects as well. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a snake or two.
After trekking the trails, return to the headquarters and have lunch. After lunch, go for another short trek in search of birds and plants. In the mid-afternoon, make your way to the jetty and get aboard the boat for your return to Kuching.
Day 4: Visit Batang Ai to Search for Wild Orangutans
Today you will travel to Batang Ai National Park to begin a deep jungle trek in search of wild orangutan. During the journey, you will stop at Lachau Bazaar. Stroll around the shops and the small native market and have an early lunch in a local coffee shop.
When you arrive at Batang Ai, you will board a longboat and travel upriver to the Iban longhouse known as Nanga Sumpa Here you will have time to visit Nanga Sumpa longhouse and spend time with the Iban people. Interact with the community; learn about their culture and enjoy some local rice wine and prepare to enter the jungle tomorrow.
Day 5 : Searching for Orangutans on the Red Ape Trail – Day 1
The morning begins as you enter the jungle and trek 2-3 hours to reach Mawang Rainforest Camp. While orangutans are only occasionally seen in this area, their nests can typically be observed along the way.
Upon arrival, settle in and have lunch at Mawang Camp. After lunch go trekking on one of the trails to search for orangutans and their nests. Return to camp and have dinner. Overnight at Mawang Rainforest Camp.
Day 6 : Searching for Orangutans on the Red Ape Trail – Day 2
Have breakfast in the camp. Then depart on a trek on one of the trails near the camp to search for orangutans. Return to camp for lunch. Late afternoon you will go on another trek to search for orangutans and their nests. Return to camp before dusk and have dinner. Overnight at Mawang Rainforest Camp.
Day 7 : Searching for Orangutans on the Red Ape Trail – Day 3
Today you will trek from the jungle back to Nanga Sumpa. Continue to search for wild orangutans and other wildlife before you get back to the village. In the afternoon you can go on a circular trek in the Nanga Sumpa area through primary and secondary forest that is known orangutan habitat. Alternatively you can take a boat upriver to Enseluai Waterfall for a swim. Return to lodge for dinner. After dinner proceed to the longhouse across the river. Spend some time “berandau” (talking) with the longhouse people before retiring for the night.
Day 8: Return to Kuching
After breakfast, you will travel downriver to the Batang Ai Lake jetty and then overland back to Kuching. This journey will take most of the day, but you will have the evening to go out in Kuching. We recommend trying some delicious seafood.
Day 9: Travel from Kuching to Sepilok
After breakfast, meet your driver for a transfer to the airport for your flight to Sandakan – connecting in Kota Kinabalu. Arrive at Sandakan Airport in the afternoon and meet your driver for a transfer to the Sepilok Area. Check into your accommodation and spend the rest of the day free at leisure. If you’re up for it, head to the Rainforest Discovery Center and join the guided nightwalk. This is a great way to see Borneo’s abundant and interesting nocturnal wildlife.
Day 10: Start your Kinabatangan River Safari
Enjoy your breakfast at your hotel. Spend the morning free at leisure. You can take a stroll to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center.
Around Noon your driver will take you to the Kinabatangan River. Here you will take a short boat ride to the lodge and get settled in. In the late afternoon, your wildlife experience in the Kinabatangan River will begin with a sunset river cruise. As the daylight begins to fade, you will see the river banks teeming with monkeys and birds getting ready to bed down for the night.
Day 11: Kinabatangan River Safari
Today you will wake up early for dawn river cruise in search of wildlife. The early morning is a great time to spot birds and the Kinabatangan river is home to a significant amount of species.
You will spend the middle of the day free to relax or roam around near the lodge before heading out for another late afternoon wildlife river cruise. After dinner, gear up with your headlamp or torchlight and take a guided night walk to find the smaller wildlife and the curious insects that turn up after dark.
Day 12 : Kinabatangan River to Danum Valley
Following breakfast, you will travel to one of Borneo’s most precious places, Danum Valley. Enjoy the changing landscapes that gradually give way to virgin rainforest that has remained relatively untouched for millions of years. Once you are settled in, your guide will give you an introduction to the Borneo rainforest and the trails surrounding the lodge. After dinner, go on a guided night safari to spot nocturnal creatures. Optional night driving safari’s are also available.
Day 13: Danum Valley
Wake up early for an early morning jungle trek. You will be able to see the forest come to life as the sun rises over this pristine jungle.
After you return for breakfast, you have part of the day to relax or wander around on your own. Take a dip in the Ulu Segama river if you like (no crocodiles here). In the afternoon you will head off for another trek. There are various types of trails and your guide can discuss this with you. Return to the center in late afternoon, in time to watch the sky change colors as the sun sets. After dinner, go on an included night walk with your guide or arrange for an optional 4×4 night safari.
Day 14: Travel from Danum Valley to Mabul Island
Today you will head for Mabul Island and the stunning Sipidan Reef. Before you go however, wake up early and take one last sunrise walk in Danum Valley.
When you reach the town of Semporna you will board a boat for the island. Once you arrive, relax in this island paradise surrounded by turquoise waters.
*Note: If you have are a scuba diver, let us know and we can arrange a dive at sipidan reef for you.
Day 15: Mabul Island Day 1
If you are diver, today you will spend the day out diving in the stunning reefs. If you are not a diver, you can spend the whole day free at leisure or go snorkeling. Either way, you won’t want to leave this place.
Day 16: Mabul Island Day 2
Today is similar to day 15. You will either be diving or relaxing. The choice is yours.
Day 17: Departure
After breakfast, once the staff have managed to convince you you can’t stay forever, you will hop aboard the boat and return to the mainland. Your driver will take you to Tawau airport for your departure.
