The Borneo Family Trip will take you on a journey through Malaysian Borneo that starts in Sabah and finishes in Sarawak.
First of all, you will visit Sepilok to see orangutans and the world’s smallest bear species, the sun bear. Next up is a wildlife safari on the Kinabatangan River where you will have the opportunity to see Borneo’s amazing wildlife, up close and personal.
After the Kinabatangan you will travel over land to Kota Kinabalu with stops at Poring Hot Springs and Kinabalu National Park. Finally, your last few days in Sabah will be spent in Kota Kinabalu and the surrounding tropical islands.
After Sabah, you will travel to Kuching. Start off with a few days in the city, where you will enjoy Kuching’s beautiful historic waterfront. During your time in Kuching, you will have the opportunity to tour the city by bicycle as well as visit the nearby Bako National Park to hike and spot wildlife. Don’t worry though, we’ve included ample time for you to kick back and take it all in. After you’ve had your time in the city, we’ll shuttle you off to a lovely beach resort for you to relax on the sandy beach. Experience the various vibrant cultures of Sarawak by experiencing the Sarawak Cultural Village.
Borneo Family Trip Itinerary
Day 01: Arrival Sandakan – Sepilok
Pick up from the airport and take you to the hotel. Once you’re all checked in, you can relax or do some exploring.
Day 02: Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation & Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Center
The real adventure starts today as you travel to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center and the Sunbear Center for a close-up look at rescued Orangutans and Sun bears. After feeding time, we’ll get you checked in to a nearby hotel.
In the afternoon, visit the canopy walkway at the Rainforest Discovery Center. Don’t miss the night walk here as you have a great opportunity to see all sorts of cool animals from flying squirrels to the slow loris.
Day 03: Sepilok – Kinabatangan River
After a tasty hotel breakfast and a short drive to the Sandakan Yacht Club you will hop on a boat and head for a wildlife adventure on the Kinabatangan river.
The adventure starts with a boat cruise in the late afternoon where you might see anything from proboscis monkeys to the Bornean pygmy elephant.
After dinner, you will finish your 3rd day of this Borneo family trip with a night time river cruise to see the strange animals that only come out at night.
Day 04: Kinabatangan River
Today is all about spotting wildlife on the iconic Kinabatangan River. The day will include an early morning river cruise, a late afternoon river cruise, and a night walk in the jungle to see the small creatures you might not spot from the boat.
Day 05: Kinabatangan – Kundasang
For your fifth day, you will head from the lowlands to Borneo’s highlands and the town of Kundasang for some slightly cooler weather. Along the way, you will stop at Poring hot springs, which is part of Kinabalu National Park. Here you will be able to take a dip in the hot springs or hike the canopy walkway and visit a waterfall.
Day 06: Kundasang – Kota Kinabalu
Today you will visit the Unesco World Heritage site that is Kinabalu National Park. You will have the opportunity to visit the botanical garden where you can see some of the park’s rarest plant species (and some that only exist in the park).
The orchid section is particularly amazing. There is an excellent series of hiking trails in the park to explore, with some offering stunning views of Mount Kinabalu.
After spending the day roaming the park, it’s time to head back down the mountain to Sabah’s capital, Kota Kinabalu.
Day 07: Island Hopping (Sapi & Manukan Islands)
Tropical islands are on the menu for today as you visit two islands off the coast of Kota Kinabalu: Sapi Island and Manukan Island. Some of the things you can do on these islands include: snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, parasailing, banana boat ride, sea walking, coral flyer zipline, jet skiing, volleyball, hiking, or simply relaxing on the beach.
Day 08: Kota Kinabalu – Kuching
Day 8 is a transit day. Today you will fly from Kota Kinabalu to Sarawak’s capital city, Kuching. There are no activities scheduled for day 8, so depending on your flight times, you will either have time to check out Kota Kinabalu, or time to wander the scenic waterfront of Kuching.
Day 09: Bako National Park
You will spend your day at Bako National Park, just a short distance from Kuching. Together with your guide, you and your family will explore the trails through jungle, beachside cliffs, and mangroves that make Bako such a great place. Keep your eye out for unique wildlife, ranging from mudskippers and blue fiddler crabs to the three types of monkeys that live here: proboscis monkeys, silverleaf monkeys, and macaques. If you are lucky, you might spot a snake or two. The park is also home to a wide range of birds and plants. After trekking the trails, return to the park headquarters for some lunch and perhaps a short trek after. You’ll head back to your hotel mid-afternoon.
Day 10: Cycling Tour & Damai Beach
The 10th day of your Borneo family trip will start off with a bicycle tour of Kuching. The seat of a bicycle offers a great vantage point as you get to see some of the unique landmarks of Kuching, including temples, markets, street art, the waterfront, and more. After a jaunt around the city, you will head out into the countryside and see how the locals live their daily lives. The best part is sampling all the food along the way. This is a casual bike ride and it takes about 3.5 hours total.
After the morning’s bike ride and the rest of your adventure up to this point, you might need a rest. So the rest of your time will be spent at a resort at Damai Beach, where you can unwind for the last few days of your trip.
Day 11 : Sarawak Cultural Village
Just down the street from your hotel in Damai Beach is the Sarawak Cultural Village. You’ll have the opportunity to spend part of the day here. This open-air-museum is a great place for you to learn about the culture and heritage of Sarawak and its people.
There are traditional style longhouses of the Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, and Iban people, along with a Penan hut and more. As you tour these traditional dwellings, you will learn about the diverse array of cultures that make up Borneo. Take a peek in the Melanau and Malay houses and visit the Chinese farmhouse. Each house is built according to the traditional styles, complemented by traditional artifacts. At each house, you will find a native person who can explain more about their culture.
There are also various activities to participate in, like net-casting, cooking, and sword making. Finish the visit with a performance of dance and song in the theatre.
Day 12: Kuching Departure
Today is your last day and we’ll be sad to see you leave. Even so, we’ll still give you a ride back to the airport and wish you well upon your way.
