Tour Overview

The 19-day Best of Borneo tour package takes you to all of Borneo’s top attractions. Highlights of this tour include Mulu National Park, Mt. Kinabalu National Park, a wildlife safari on the Kinabatangan River, the virgin rainforest of Danum Valley, and the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. Additionally, we’ve made sure to include a wide ranging experience that includes city, culture, wildlife, jungle, and, of course, food.

Your trip starts with a few days in the historic city of Kuching, where you will enjoy Kuching’s beautiful historic waterfront along with a bicycle tour, and a visit to Bako National Park to hike and spot wildlife. Additionally, you will experience the culture of the indigenous Bidayuh people at a jungle homestay just outside of Kuching

The next stop is the world famous Mulu National Park where you will visit the massive caves that were featured on BBC’s planet earth. Here you will witness one of the most impressive natural phenomena in the world when millions of bats all exit the cave at once under the setting sun.

A trip to Kota Kinabalu follows Mulu National Park. Here you will start with a cycling trip to a rural homestay, followed by some river rafting.

After that, you will start an overland journey towards Danum Valley. The first stop will be Kinabalu National park for some hiking and stunning views. Following Kinabalu National Park, you’ll make a stopover at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation center and then on a willdlife safari on the Kinabatangan River.


Day 1: Arrive in Kuching

Upon your arrival at the Kuching International Airport we’ll pick you up and give you a ride to your hotel. Once you are all checked in, the rest of the day is yours. We recommend getting out and checking out the waterfront. Make sure to try some of Kuching’s famous dishes like Laksa Kuching.

Day 2: Bicycle Tour of Kuching

Today you will have the opportunity to get on your bicycle and explore the highlights and hidden gems of Sarawak’s capital. Along the way, the guide will teach you all about the history and cultures of Kuching as you pass by famous landmarks. Your guide will lead you across the bridge to visit the local Kuba Ria market where you will get to taste some of the exotic and extraordinary foods of Borneo before you continue on to the Malay Kampungs (villages). End your trip with a river crossing in a traditional Sampan, or water taxi.

Following the tour, the rest of the day is yours.

Day 3: Bako National Park

Day 3 is all about nature as you head to Bako National Park for some hiking along this beautiful jungle covered coastline.

Here in Bako, you will spend the day trekking in search of epic views and wildlife like the endemic Proboscis monkey.

After you visit Bako, we’ll take you back to Kuching in the late afternoon where the rest of the day will be yours.

Day 4: Kuching – Saloma Homestay

Pick up from your hotel in the morning by your local guide and enjoy a scenic transfer to the Semenggoh Orangutan Centre to observe the great apes while they swing down from the treetops to feast on fruit during the feeding time.

After the orangutan centre, proceed to Kampung Sadir where you will check in at Saloma Homestay. Relax while your hosts are preparing a local Bidayuh lunch. All the ingredients are grown locally or sourced from the jungle.

After lunch, proceed to an original Bidayuh longhouse and learn about the culture of the tribe. Find out how bamboo plays a big part of the lives of the natives. Do not be afraid to ask questions! Visit the local school and pay a visit to the mat weaver’s house. Return to Saloma Homestay in the afternoon and spend some time free at leisure before dinner is served. After dinner, there is an option to go for a night walk in search of fireflies and other nocturnal creatures.

Day 5: Saloma Homestay

After breakfast, gear up and head out into the jungle surrounding the village. Today, you will pass paddy fields and farms as you make your way to the thick rainforest that borders both Kalimantan and Sarawak. Together with your guide you will explore the jungle and everything that is has to offer. Learn about the flora and fauna in the forest as you trek towards the jungle camp. Along the way, stop for a packed lunch. In the afternoon, arrive at the jungle camp and make yourself comfortable.
Note: The jungle camp is very basic! The camp will be built by the locals especially for this trip. It’s a temporary structure.

Day 6: Saloma Homestay – Kuching

Gear up and start trekking the jungle trails towards a beautiful clear-water waterfall. Take a dip in the refreshing water and enjoy the natural setting, surrounded by greenery and jungle sounds. Let your guide explain more about the flora and fauna that is found in these parts of Borneo, and how the natives harvest jungle produce. Trek back to the homestay for lunch before departing to Kuching. Drop off at your hotel in the mid-afternoon.

Day 7: Kuching – Mulu National Park

Today you will fly from Kuching to Mulu National Park. Late in the afternoon, you will go on a trek towards Deer Cave. The trail follows a walkway through the thick and ancient forest. Deer cave one of the world’s largest caves…big enough to fly a jumbo jet through, comfortably.

After Deer cave, pay a visit to the neighboring Lang cave, which has a completely different look. Exit the caves and relax at the Bat Observatory. If weather permits, you will experience the evening exodus of millions of bats heading out to feed.

Day 8: Mulu National Park

After breakfast you will take a traditional longboat up the river towards the Wind and Clearwater caves. Along the way, visit the Penan longhouse of Batu Bangan where you will learn about the history and culture of this once nomadic tribe. Continue your way up the rapids towards the entrance of the cave. If the water is low, you might need to help the boatman to push the boat up the stream. Arrive at the cave system and start exploring with your guide. After exiting the caves, enjoy a cooling swim in the river and have a picnic lunch on the riverbank. After lunch, hop back aboard the boat and head back to your accommodation in Mulu.

Day 9: Mulu National Park – Kota Kinabalu

Today you fly to Sabah’s capital city, Kota Kinabalu. Once you’re checked in to the hotel, the day is yours to check out this city bordering the ocean.

Day 10: Kota Kinabalu – Cycling Tour – Homestay

Your first activity in Sabah is a cycling trip to the rural town of Kiulu. The choice is yours whether you want to cycle the full 50km or take the short trip to the old stone church and onwards to a lovely waterfall for lunch. You’ll spend the night in the countryside at a lovely homestay in Kiulu.

Day 11: Homestay – River Rafting – Kota Kinabalu

In the late morning, meet the rafting guide for some whitewater rafting. This is a mild river and the trip is a leisurely one. After rafting, have lunch near the river and return to Kota Kinabalu.

Day 12: Kota Kinabalu – Kinabalu National Park

Today you travel to Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia’s first UNESCO world heritage site. Along the way, you will stop at a local market filled with local handmade goods and excellent views of Mount Kinabalu. When you arrive at the park, you can wander the many trails that wind through the forest surrounding the mountain. Additionally, you will visit the botanical gardens which boasts more than 5000 species of plants and flowers, some of which are endemic to borneo. You will spend the night in the cool mountain air of Kundasang.

Day 13: Kundasang – Sepilok

Day 13 is an exciting day as you travel to sepilok to visit the Orangutan sanctuary and the neighboring sun bear sanctuary. Feeding time at both places is a great way to get an up close and personal glimpse of 2 of Borneo’s iconic species.

In the evening, you will visit the Rainforest Discovery Center (RDC) for a nightwalk searching for wildlife such as the flying squirrel, slow loris, western tarsier and much more.

Day 14: Sepilok – Kinabatangan River

From sepilok, you will travel to the Kinabatangan river. Meet your driver at 1230pm for transport toward the Kinabatangan river. In the late afternoon you will take your first river cruise in search of wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, wild orangutan and many bird species. After dinner, another river cruise is on the menu. Night time is a great time to see the birdlife that roosts close to the water and nocturnal birds such as kingfishers, owls and frogmouth birds.

*Note: Depending on your level of accommodation, not all resorts have a night time cruise. If they do not, you will typically embark on a nightwalk instead.

Day 15: Kinabatangan River

Wake up just before sunrise for a light snack before you head out on the river for an early morning boat cruise. The birds are really active in the mornings and it’s a great time to see proboscis monkeys.

After the morning cruise, you will have free time until the evening when you will once again set out on a sunset river cruise. Tonight you will follow the guide on a nightwalk through the jungle to spot the curious creatures that make up Borneo’s ‘night shift’.

Day 16: Kinabatangan River – Lahad Datu

Today you will head for Lahad Datu and spend the night at a quaint bed and breakfast. In the mid afternoon you will go to bukit Piton on an afternoon/evening trip searching for wildlife. The main attraction will be looking for wild orangutan which are frequently sighted here. You will also participate in a tree planting activity to give back to Borneo.

Day 17: Lahad Datu – Danum Valley

Today you will head for the stunning forest of Danum Valley. Once you arrive and get settled in, our guide will bring you into the jungle in search of wildlife. After dinner, there will be the opportunity to go for a night drive. Night drives are a wonderful way to spot some of the more unique wildlife like flying squirrels, the flying lemur, slow loris, and elephants.

Day 18: Danum Valley

For your last full day of the trip, wake up early and follow your guide for an early morning trek in search of wildlife and the sun rising over the jungle.

There will be several more treks throughout the day, giving you ample opportunity to see the wonder of the Borneo rainforest with its wildlife, clean rivers, waterfalls, and incredible biodiversity. In the evening you will once again have the opportunity to follow a night drive safari.

Day 19: Danum Valley – Lahad Datu – Kota Kinabalu

Join your guide for an early morning walk through the jungle. This is your last chance to get out into the jungle before we send you on your way.

Once you have had breakfast, we will transfer you out of Danum and off to the Lahad Datu Airport. If you desire, we can arrange a flight back to Kota Kinabalu for you.
