One of the places for day hikes can also be found at the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu City, which is the Inobong Substation Hill. It is located at the Inobong Village Penampang, approximately about 34 km and less than 30-minutes drive from Kota Kinabalu City. A steep and gravel pavement making it a challenge for anyone to hike up to reach the substation. Nonetheless, the breathtaking view will make the hike worthwhile.

3) Sosodikon Hill (Pyramid Hill)

One of the easiest day hikes that travelers can try out will be Sosodikon Hill or known as Pyramid Hill, due to the unique shape of the hills similar to the pyramid shape. Sosodikon Hill is located about 5 km from Kundasang Town. Travelers would need to wear proper outdoor shoes (best to use those with a strong grip). In addition, travelers are also recommended to start their hike before 6:30 am in order to reach the peak of the hill and it would only take about 20-30 mins to reach the peak. Upon reaching the peak of Sosodikon Hill, travelers should not miss the opportunity to capture some photos of the amazing sunrise view, Mount Kinabalu, and Kundasang valley, which travelers can upload it in Instagram and share to everyone to see!

In Tamparuli, there is one place that could attract travelers (and locals too!) for a day hike, which is St. Veronica’s Hill or locally known as Bukit Perahu (Ship Rock Hill), due to its rock formation resembling a vessel shape stranded on the hill. Initially, St. Veronica’s Hill is only used by the Roman Catholics to do the Station of the Cross during Easter. Now, it has become one of the popular places for locals and travelers to go for a day hike. Hiking St. Veronica’s Hill is a bit tough and challenging, as it takes about 30 – 60 minutes to reach the summit. However, once you have reached the summit, travelers will be rewarded with the spectacular view of sunrise, a sea of clouds and majestic Mount Kinabalu. Be sure to start the hike in the early morning, so travelers will not miss the chance to see the panoramic landscapes and beauty of nature during the daytime.

5) Bald Hill (Bukit Botak)

Another place that is perfect for a day hike would be Bald Hill or Bukit Botak, it is located at Sepanggar which is about 30-45 minutes drive from Kota Kinabalu City. The reason why it was called Bald Hill is because there are no trees and is full of green grass at the peak. Therefore, it is advisable to hike up early morning before the sun rise, as it would be scorching hot after sun rise. Be sure to drink plenty of water and put on sunscreen before hiking up the hill. Reaching the peak will not dampen your spirit: you’ll be amazed at how magnificent the view of Kota Kinabalu City, the sea, and even Mount Kinabalu looks like. Moreover, the phenomenal view with the combination of the green grass scenery makes it a perfect place for a photoshoot.

6) Kopungit Hill

Travelers can also look for a day hike near Kota Kinabalu City, which is Kopungit Hill. It is just a 2 km hike from the starting point to the top, some might think hiking up the Kopungit Hill is a bit challenging due to many big rocks and there is no proper trail. However, it became famous amongst local especially when they get to the top and witness the beautiful sunset and former Kota Kinabalu International Airport Terminal Two. There is also a small cave which was deemed to have been there before World War II and was used as shelter spot. If you are into rock climbing, you can also experience a different sight while climbing this mountain by doing rock climbing! It’s free, but you will obviously need to bring your own equipment.

7) Signal Hill

If travelers have spare time before their transfer to the airport, they can go for a hike at the Signal Hill trail. Not only does it help travelers to pass some time, but they can get the opportunity to discover many hidden historical sites at the Signal Hill. There are actually many abandoned buildings at the Signal Hill, which will bring anyone back to the British colonization bygone era. Once reaching the top, travelers will be in awe with the breathtaking view of Kota Kinabalu City and the Likas Bay. However, there is also a shorter and easier trail for travelers to go starting from the Atkinson Clock Tower trail and hike up to the Signal Hill Observatory Platform, where they can witness the panoramic landscapes of Kota Kinabalu City as well as the Tunku Abdul Rahman Islands.

All of the hills mentioned above have one thing in common, that is offering travelers a great memorable hiking experience for a day and a chance to witness the beauty of Sabah Borneo from the peak of the hills. Apart from that, travelers will never forget their priceless memory of witnessing the picturesque view of Sabah Borneo, the sunrise (or sunsets) and the magnificent Mount Kinabalu from the peak of the hills, making the aching sores and tiring hike totally worth it for their Borneo Holidays.
