Have you ever eaten Ayam Penyet before? A delicacy that you should try whenever you visit Southeast Asia. Ayam Penyet is actually a fried chicken that smashed so the meat will be softer. It served with sambal (hot chili paste or sauce), slices of cucumbers, fried tofu, tempeh and white rice. Though Ayam Penyet itself is from Indonesia, you can also find the food in Malaysia! Malaysian adores the food and opened few franchises selling Ayam Penyet.

Sweat not, if you are traveling in Sabah Borneo, you can still get the chance to taste Ayam Penyet too! It is none other than Jom Penyet, located at the level 3 Aeropod building in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu City. The newest food outlet in Kota Kinabalu City which served Malay-Indonesian cuisine. It opens daily from 8 am to 10 pm. Though at times, they do cater for private functions. Some said you can get the best and delicious Ayam Penyet there, and we could not agree more! It’s such an honor for Top Peak Travel to get invited for food tasting. We can tell you that the food there is so yummy and worth for the price.

The interior and exterior of the outlet are of modern concept and we love to see how they decorate the settings. Simple but pleasing to the eyes. The walls at the indoor dining area are creatively drawn like a comic book (wait till you see their menu!). Apart from that, sitting in the dining area will give you a chance to see some actions from the kitchen. There is a large see-thru glass wall that separates the indoor dining area and the kitchen. The best thing is, it is an air-conditioned area and you can bring your kids to dine in there to escape the heat.

Besides, if you are the type of person prefer to enjoy eating in the open-air, you can sit at the outdoor dining area. Moreover, you’ll be in awe to see the beautiful garden settings that you can see outside. Making it perfect spot for casual dining while enjoying the yummy food in Jom Penyet. There is also a beverage station and a couple of dining tables before the entrance to the indoor dining area.

Apart from that, one of the things that might fascinate you is their menu! The menu is creatively drawn like a cartoon artwork. When you browse through the menu, it’s kind of like you are reading a comic book. This is definitely a creative way of presenting the restaurant’s unique features.

Finally, the food comes. Here’s what we had:

Jom Penyet Sabah Borneo

So many yummy food in one big bamboo tray!

The food set for us is quite well-presented and it is a set for about 6-8 pax. It consists of Ayam Penyet, charcoal-grilled Tenggiri Fish, grilled lamb, sambal and side dishes. It’s time to eat! The dishes are so delicious, even the food portions given to us is big too. Not forgotten, the sambal is to die for because it is oh-so-spicy-but-wonderful!

In short, every food we tasted is so delicious and it is a must to try. Not only that, all the staff are friendly and attentive towards their guest. We hope Jom Penyet will become as one of the popular spots for anyone to enjoy Malay-Indon cuisine in Sabah Borneo! Want to know the must eat food in Sabah Borneo? Tawau Hills Park for Borneo Holiday

Last January, I went to Tawau to attend one of my best friend’s wedding. Tawau is the third largest town in Sabah Borneo, after Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan. Besides, Tawau is also the main gateway to the world’s top dive destination in Sabah Borneo – Sipadan Island.

Feel free to read the history and some information about Hills Park

Tawau Hills Park is a recreational park and conservation area that is about 20 km away from Tawau Town. Getting there will be hard for non-local, as there is no bus available there. It is best to go there by using a taxi or Uber/Grab. Luckily for me, most of my friends live in Tawau, so I manage to get there without difficulty. The road from Tawau Town to Tawau Hills Park is quiet and secluded while passing by hills of oil palm plantations.

Entrance/ conservation fee before enter the park

There is an entrance/ conservation fee that you will need to pay before entering Tawau Hills Park. With its size of 28,000 hectares, this park is open daily from 8 am until 4.30pm. Various comfortable facilities are available at the park for visitors. Such facilities are:

  • Canteen
  • Public toilets and shower rooms
  • Barbecue and picnic area
  • Suspension bridges
  • Jungle trails
  • Accommodations and hostels
  • Meeting/seminar/workshop room
  • Soccer Field/ Mini Hall & Court Games, and
  • Surau

Tawau Hills Park Map Trail

Tawau Hills Park is also known by the locals as “Table”, which is based on a waterfall’s name. It became as one of the perfect places for family/group activities to do during the weekend or holidays. Several activities to do there are:

  • Picnic and barbeque
  • Swim in the river or the Sulphur Hot Spring
  • Jungle Trekking Canopy Walkway
  • Visit botanical garden
  • Climb Mount Magdalena (1,312m) or Mount Lucia (1,202m)

If a day trip in the park is not enough for you, you can go do an overnighter at Magdalena Chalet or Bombalai Jungle Lodge. Besides that, there is a hostel available in the park, but it is a bit far from the headquarters. This hostel is for those who are going for climbing Mount Magdalena or Mount Lucia.

Unfortunately, my friends and I miss the chance to go for climbing activity at the Tawau Hills Park. So, if you like climbing, be sure not to make the same mistake like we did and left our hiking shoes at home! Since we don’t have that much time left in Tawau, we spent most of our time at the main headquarters park area.

Where shall we go?

Frankly speaking, being in Tawau Hills Park gave me a peace of mind and tranquility far beyond me chilling at home. Breathing in the cool clean air and swimming in crystal clear river while surrounded by lush green trees. Somehow, I regretted not bringing my hiking shoes that day, so I can explore more of the park area. I have read in one of the blogs that Tawau Hills Park do have some amazing waterfalls and Sulphurous Hot Springs (darn it!).

Apart from that, I manage to meet a few long-tailed macaques wandering around the park area. But, be aware and do not get close to the macaques. because they are mischievous animals and will grab anything from you. Funny thing is, it happened to us that day.(haha!) We were holding a plastic full of snacks, all of sudden one of the macaques jumped from the tree and frightened us. Lucky for us, we manage to run away from the macaques as fast as we could. (Haha!) It was unfortunate that it also happened to another visitor who left his backpack unattended. A group of cheeky macaques managed to steal a bag of chips and other things from his backpack! (Note: Keep an eye on your belongings and bags when visiting any Park)

Our Sabah Borneo Tour!

new year countdown tradition in Sabah Borneo

Few more days for us to say goodbye to the year of 2017 and say hello to 2018! Countdown to the New Year is kind of a yearly tradition in my family, we will always celebrate it together to mark the last day of the year. Living in a modern Kadazan family in Sabah Borneo, here is how we celebrate the countdown of New Year.

Since my grandmother is living with us, our house became the “main” house for any celebrations. My uncles and aunties who are living far will come to my house to celebrate the New Year’s Eve celebration together.

During New Year’s Eve, one can hear the sound of meat being fried, vegetables being chopped on the cutting board, dishes being washed, cats playing around, people talking and laughing in the kitchen while soft music is being played in the background, which I know, not everyone bothers to listen to the music because we are being so loud…hahaha

new year countdown tradition in Sabah Borneo

As usual, the women will always be in the kitchen for food preparation for the party at night, while the men will be outside preparing the barbecue pit and cleaning up, the kids will be playing outside with each other or watching their favorite cartoon shows on the television. As for myself with my cousins, we will be busy filling up the balloons with water and the foldable swimming pool for New Year.

When the night comes and a variety of delicious home-cooked meal has been prepared, as well as the barbecue food are being served on the table, it is time to dig in! There is also a karaoke session, which the kids will always control the microphone; while the adults will be sitting together to chat, eat, and drink. Drinking booze during the party is a must not only for my family but also for other families who are living in Sabah Borneo.

new year countdown tradition in Sabah Borneo

As the clock shows 10 minutes before midnight, this is the part where we enjoy the most, as we will be outside by the poolside to standby for our “water-balloon fight”. Surprisingly, I can see the excitement coming not only from the kids’ face but from adults too, as they patiently wait for the clock to strike midnight. Tick Tock…Tick Tock.. the clock strikes midnight and the water-balloon fight begin! All of us will start to throw the water balloons at each other, laughing and shouting towards each other, while getting ourselves wet. Splashing water to each other for New Year to “wash” away the bad luck and as a celebration of a new beginning.

To sum up, that is how we celebrate our New Year countdown party and it is kind of a yearly tradition for my family celebrating together. So, what is your tradition for New Year countdown celebration? Apart from that, if you get a chance to spend your Borneo Holidays in Sabah Borneo for New Year, be sure to celebrate it with any local Kadazan family. I can assure you, you will be amazed by the warm welcome you will get and the enjoyable experience with them.
