Sarawak Longhouse Adventure

The Iban settled their longhouses in all the areas of Sarawak. A longhouse is an extended family environment where many families live in their existence under a single roof with open veranda that offers a marvelous view of rural life in the form of rice fields, rubber farm and fruits trees.

Headhunting was at its height among the tribes of Borneo Last Century. The need for land pushed neighbouring tribes into conflict and ownership of an enemy’s head was the sign of a true warrior. More than 100years ago in the north of what was to become Sarawak, Sarawak government eventually brought peace to the area with the help of Iban warriors in the early 19th century. The Iban settled their longhouses in all the areas of Sarawak. A longhouse is an extended family environment where many families live in their existence under a single roof with open veranda that offers a marvelous view of rural life in the form of rice fields, rubber farm and fruits trees. The longhouse dwellers hunt and farm for their foods. Today the jungle is recognized as a place of beauty, biological diversity and hospitality. The Iban, Kayan, Kelabit and over a dozen others tribal group welcome visitors to their homelands. The wonders of the rainforest are here to be explored.

Day 1: Kuching – Batang Ai

This exciting day start with a pleasure drive departing from hotel to an interior of longhouse. Journey drive through the scenic greenery of rainforest, fields of pepper farm, houses and school. The 1st pit stop will be at Serian town where a visit to an excellent market. Next continue journey up country with a stop at the pepper farm to see how pepper is grow and in few minute time, you will arrive at a Lachau café for your lunch. After lunch, continue to drive for 2hours to reach the Batang Ai Hydro Dam terminal. Hope on to a local native longboat for 50minute ride reaching the Iban longhouse located at Batang Ai man-make-lake called Nanga Ukom. Upon arrival, check into the room of the longhouse. Have time for the orientation tour of this preserved longhouse. Your local tour guide with the helping of local folk are preparing the dinner. Dinner is sitting on the floor mat inside the room of the longhouse. Later follow by the fabulous dances that welcome you with their tribe costume. This is the most unforgettable evening in your life time. Beside that they serve you with the local brew rice wine called “Tuak”. Longhouse provided you with mosquite nett, bedsheet, pillowcase, towel, mattress and blanket.

Day 2: Batang Ai

Breakfast is serve in the longhouse. Wake up early to the sound of cockerels, pigs, dogs, birds and rippling sound of the river. After breakfast, Iban folk will show you how blowpipe is used. A guided nature walk into the jungle gives you an opportunity to learn about some medicinal plants, edible fruits trees, Padi field, forest and fern leaves. Opportunity to trek to the waterfall but do not expect the water are high should it be a dry season. The boatman will help to prepare backwoods cooking native style of picnic lunch at the riverbank. Perhaps after lunch, you wish to have a short trek before returning back to the same longhouse. Dinner and overnight in the same longhouse.

Day 3: Batang Ai – Kuching

Breakfast is serve in the longhouse. By morning, packing all your belonging and time to say SELAMAT JALAN, means goodbye to the longhouse people. Travelling in the same native longboat on the same river to your waiting coach. Arriving in Serian late afternoon, you will be taken to a simple café for your lunch. One can take a flight out from Kuching airport by using evening flight or back to City.
