Danum Valley is located near to Lahad Datu town, which is about a 2-hour drive. Being one of the greatest treasures Borneo has to offer, Danum Valley is a 438 square kilometers area size of the last untouched forests in Sabah Borneo. It was recognized as one of the world’s most complex ecosystem that is home to an extensive diversity species of flora and fauna. It is managed by Sabah Foundation or Yayasan Sabah Group for conservation, research, and restoration ecology purposes.
Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC) was established in 1986 for research and educational purposes. Apart from that, it is also a nursery to propagate Dipterocarpus trees by 100,000 of trees. Today, DVFC has evolved into one of the prominent rainforest research centers in Southeast Asia, fully equipped with laboratories, a conference room, quarters for researcher, dorms, camping grounds, and a cafeteria. It is no wonder that DVFC is visited by many international and locals scientists, researchers or undergraduate interns. Initially, DVFC was only for research purposes and not designed for tourist, but over the years, DVFC built a lodge for the purpose of inviting nature and wildlife enthusiasts coming to Danum Valley.
Day 1 Lahad Datu – Danum Valley Field Center (DVFC) Office – Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC)
Depart for Danum Valley Field Center (DVFC) Office from Lahad Datu town / airport. Upon reaching DVFC Office, you will be transferred using another vehicle (more susceptible to the gravel road) into DVFC.
Upon arrival, register at Welcome Center and check-in after a briefing. Meet your guide, settle in, and enjoy lunch. After lunch, relax before going on a mid afternoon walk in the area as an introduction to the Borneo Rainforest. The area surrounding the center teems with wildlife and it is not unusual for you to spot resident Orang Utan, Hornbills, etc.
Return to Center before sundown and enjoy dinner at 7pm. After dinner, go on a night walk with your guide or arrange for an optional 4×4 night drive (additional activity at own expense).
Day 2 Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC)
Wake up early for an early morning trek with your guide at 6am to see the forest come to life. Alternatively, you can also pre-arrange a 4×4 drive to Bukit Atur for a breathtaking sunrise experience atop a canopy of trees (additional activity at own expense). Return to Center for breakfast and embark on a trail in the area if you wish.
Spend late morning resting before having lunch. After lunch, take a dip at Ulu Segama River before heading off for another trek. There are several types of trail in which your guide will be able to explain to you. Return to the Center in late afternoon, in time to watch the sky change colour as the sun sets.
After dinner, go on a night walk with your guide or arrange for an optional 4×4 night drive (additional activity at own expense).
Day 3 Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC) – Danum Valley Field Center (DVFC) Office – Lahad Datu
Wake up early for more wildlife sighting possibilities. Return to eating lounge for breakfast, and spend the rest of your morning leisure until check out time at 11.30am. Arrive at DVFC Office for an overland transfer to Lahad Datu town / airport.
