Newbie guide to Rainforest World Music Festival

24

July, 2017

Going to the 20th edition of Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) last weekend was a first time for me. I can admit, the festival can be a little bit intimidating because it seems I have to prepare a lot of things before going there. Anyway, RWMF will hold again next year on 13-15th July 2018, and here I’ve compiled a list of guide for those who planned to go RWMF next year. I hope you will find this list of guides helpful before going to RWMF, because I learned my lesson.

What is Rainforest World Music Festival?

Rainforest World Music Festival is an annual three-day music festival which is held in Sarawak Cultural Village Kuching, Sarawak. The festival invites all international and local music artists from around the globe to perform and showcase their ethnic and cultural music. From gypsy music( Romengo), to the electro-folk music (Okra Playground), African Uhadi traditional instrument, to Sarawak Sape musical instrument. Not forgetting, the amazing dance performance by the O Tahiti E. This is truly the type of music that you can find in RWMF; either on the stage performance, creative workshops, or interactive demo.

Newbie Guide to RWMF

Before the festival:

1. Be sure to buy the RWMF tickets as early as possible.

The price of the entrance ticket can be a bit overwhelming if you did not purchase it in advance. So, when you see there’s somebody updating RWMF tickets available for purchase online, grab the chance to get the tickets at a cheaper price! There are also family package tickets available for 2 adults and 2 children.

Tips: don’t forget to print out the entrance tickets that you purchased online and bring it to the entrance gate on the day of the festival.

2. Book your flight and accommodation early.

Do not book last minute for your flight and accommodation because this festival is an internationally renowned festival, which means there will be a possibility that it’s fully booked.

3. Purchase 1-day pass entrance ticket.

Since you are a newbie to RWMF, it is better to purchase the 1-day pass entrance ticket, in order for you to get the feel of the festival. On top of that, the performance and events for the three days festival are almost the same. I think it would be best to purchase the last day pass entrance ticket, so you can witness the amazing grand finale performance.

On the day of the festival:

1. No need to come early

2. How to get there?

To reach RWMF, it is a 45-minutes drive distance. If you don’t have a car, it would be good if you purchase the tickets for a shuttle bus from the Kuching city to the Sarawak Cultural Village for only MYR 15. In addition, you can also use GrabCar to reach Sarawak Cultural Village for about MYR 26.

Extra tips: For those who plan to bring a car, there are limited car-parking facilities, you would need to park your car at the One Hotel Santubong area, and follow the shuttle van to and fro to the Sarawak Cultural Village. However, you would need to pay MYR 14 per trip (to and fro).

3. Have your late breakfast/ early lunch before going

Before going to RWMF, it is BEST for you to have an early lunch or late breakfast. This is because the food is rather pricey at the RWMF. Unfortunately, you are not encouraged to bring outside food and drinks to the festival.

4. Bring plenty of cash

Since there will be a lot of cash usage, even before you enter the entrance of Sarawak Cultural Village, it is best you bring plenty of cash. No vendors there will accept credit/debit cards, and there is also no ATM machines available at the Sarawak Cultural Village.

5. Wear comfy and light cloth (and bring extra clothing)

You will be spending one whole day at the RWMF, especially if you intend to go there in the afternoon for the workshops and stay until the evening concert. Not only can that, wearing comfy and light clothes help you to ease yourself from the blistering heat. I made the wrong choice to wear a black t shirt that day, and I was sweating buckets!!

Note: There is a shower facility available just outside the festival at the Damai Central. So, you won’t need to worry about looking for a place for a shower.

6. Be prepared; bring your raincoat, waterproof bags and slippers/sandals

Be ready to expect the unexpected of weather. Last RWMF, it was raining heavily in the evening and we were all soaked with wet and muddy ground. Bear in mind that this festival is held in Borneo jungle, and it’s a rain or shine festival, so be prepared to get wet! Bring a waterproof bag to keep your valuable things dry, or maybe just use a plastic bag and it should be enough.

7. Hand fan and sunglasses

When the heat strikes, these two things are what you need! Don’t forget to bring a hand fan and wear sunglasses during the festival. Apart from avoiding the heat, accessorize yourself with sunglasses to go with the festival look!

8. Sunscreen and insect repellent

Malaysia heat can be very ruthless. So, it is best to put some sunscreen except you don’t mind to get burn like a lobster. 😛 Apart from that, it is absolutely a MUST to use insect repellent when you are at the festival. Who would want their day at the festival get spoiled because of insect bites?

9. Bring plenty of water

It will be blistering heat during the day at the festival, do not forget to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. It would be such a spoil day if you got sick and could not enjoy the festival.

10. Bring your own foldable chairs, mats, or scarf for sitting on the ground

Most people do not know about this, even myself, but you are definitely encouraged to bring your own foldable chairs, mats or scarf so you can use it to sit on the ground. There are limited sitting chairs at the festival, to avoid being tired from walking, you can just spread your own mats or scarf, sit on the ground and enjoy the show.
